Frontier or Cowboy Action
Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in
which shooters compete with firearms typical of
those used on the Frontier; Single Action
Revolvers, Double Barrel Shotguns, Lever Action
Rifles, etc.
The shooting competitions are staged in a unique
old west frontier style. Scoring is based on
accuracy and speed, usually on reactive steel
targets.
The truly unique aspect of Frontier Action
shooting is the requirement placed on wearing
western era clothing. Each member is encouraged
to adopt a persona appropriate to the time
period between 1865 and 1910. They should then
develop a suitable alias and costume.
Action shooting wants participants to be safe,
have fun, develop their competitive shooting
skills and most of all enjoy the rich traditions
of the old time western frontier.
This
shooting sport was designed for all levels of
shooters. Targets are generous in size and
placed at such proximity that the difficulty or
challenge competitors face is the speed they
engage a course of fire. However, competitors
all learn soon enough that no target is too big
or too close that they can't miss it.
Specific rules and
explanations can be found in the Single Action
Shooting Society (SASS) Shooter's Handbook which
